Unusual Scuba Dive Destinations

2017 sneaked away far too fast and so did the first half of 2018, there is luckily still time to enjoy some awesome scuba destination before hanging up your wetsuit. With the few months left maybe some of the unusual scuba diving places is what we all need to make this year super Special.

West Ireland, Skellig Michael

Sensational diving into the cold water that holds walls of sponges and corals in exceptional visibility. The cliffs above the water are 218m and below the surface, you pick your depth, while the surface offers a seabird colony and it is off-course one of the locations where scenes for the Star Wars: The Force Awakens were shot in 2014.

Cuba, Guanacabibes, Maria la Gorda

Perfect for adventurous divers this resort is one of the best and on Cuba’s most western point. It offers a variety of diving sites including warm-water and dives sites from deep open-water areas to shallow reefs allowing all divers to enjoy an extended array of biodiversity plus it is suited for divers of all experience levels.

New Zealand, Poor Knights Island

There are many reasons why this is a simply superb option, the island is a no-take marine fully protected reserve. Poor Knights Island offers underwater volcanic archways which are patrolled by schooling fish and stingrays. Dotted by nudibranchs the multicoloured bryozoans in bushes cover the pinnacles and for most divers, it’s the world best diving secret. For some amazing reef and wreck diving, you are bound to be impressed by visiting the Bay of Islands and it is a great spot for swimming with the dolphins so all in all it could make for a holiday truly worth raving about.

Indonesia, North Sulawesi, Bangka Island

This is a secret, hidden island between Bunaken and Lembeh both busy dive resorts. It is about a two-hour drive to the Banka Island from the Manado airport and even if it feels quite remote it offers one of the most biodiverse marine life and it is in the middle of the coral triangle and home to frogfish, dugong and nudis, well millions of them. Incredible dive experiences also include the viewing of Pygmy seahorses, magnificent caverns, walls, pinnacles, muck dives and shallow reefs.

California, Redondo Beach

Squid runs at the start of December is simply amazing, at Redondo Beach the dive sites are great and in this deep canyon, all sorts come alive at night. Thousands of squads come to great during your dive and come up to 70’ to lay egg sacs and mate.

USA, The Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary

The healthiest reef system worldwide lies just about 100 miles of the Texas coast, this Gulf of Mexico gem is so worth a trip it offers frequent visits of pelagic species during your diving experience and it is more suited for the intermediate to advanced divers or new divers in the company of experienced divers.
